Security isn’t always the first thing that comes to mind when you think of BT, but when it comes to keeping everyone safely connected, ‘We Are The Protectors’. Peter is one of them. We had a chat with him to learn about his experiences as a Cyber Security Design Specialist in Hungary and how he maintains a healthy work-life balance.
What is your role?
I'm a Security engineer and designer. I design, negotiate and discuss with our customers how we can implement their plans and request whilst addressing their needs.
Can you tell us a bit about your career journey and how BT has supported your development?
I am very lucky because I worked in the IT industry during its golden era. I worked a lot and was able to take part in big projects and solutions, I have taken part in achieving many remarkable milestones.
This period ended and coincided with the birth of my children. In all respects, the time came to find a new job where I could use my vast experience that I gained over the years. In addition to the importance of my job, I wanted to concentrate on my next big challenge of my life, raising my children.
Here at BT in Hungary, I deal with tasks that require my many years of experience, meaning I can put all the specialist knowledge I gained over the years to great use.
When I talk about myself, I think of my children. I am grateful that this is accepted and supported at BT in Hungary, as the company itself is a family friendly workplace. The biggest support I can get is that overtime, weekend and night work is not expected. There can be shorter deadlines or exceptional cases of course. But given that BT grants me flexibility during the day, it is not a problem to repay the favour and occasionally deal with exceptional cases. This opportunity is a huge improvement in my life. I feel like I'm in a completely different and much better place here. It feels especially good since I have worked a lot on security and VPN solutions before BT, and now, I can feel the result of my previous hard work paying off every single day.
What excites you about working as a Protector in Hungary?
I have sense of mission. I have always wanted to do useful work, to make the world a little bit better. Cyber Security can do a lot for this. Making the online world safer means we can make the real world a better place. Even if I'm just only a small ant in this world.
Why is Cyber Security so important to our customers nowadays and what is your role in keeping our customers safe?
Our customers entrust us with the operation of their entire company's life. I feel the responsibility of this. The mission of Cyber Security is to ensure the smooth and safe online operations of the company. I know I’m doing my job well if our customers can do things online safely and without any issues.
The Security industry is fast moving and ever-changing because we can still see a lot of areas to improve. The online life of a company has become number one priority. My goal is to make this world a little better and help everyone, help every customer, be safer.
What attracted you to apply to BT, a multinational organisation with a strong British heritage?
I have always liked English politeness and I have always tried to live my life in this style. The other reason is that I have always loved getting to know and interact with people from across the globe.
I'm old enough to remember when you could not travel from Hungary easily. As the world changed, I was attracted by the fact that I can get out into the world, even though this mostly happens online nowadays. Unrelated to this business, I am also a big fan of motorsports, and spend a lot of time on racetracks in my free time, which I know is a big thing in England.
What do you enjoy most about working for BT?
The polite behaviour, the possibility of working from home, family friendliness, sport communities and being connected to the whole world. On a deeper level, work life balance is crucial to me. I'm grateful to BT for allowing me to have a private life when I finish my job- I'm really very, very grateful for that.
