Liar series 2: When does it start? Catch up on what happened in series 1 as Andrew's killer is set to be revealed

It was one of the hit series of 2017, and now Liar is back for another run.

You might have thought the ending of series one was pretty conclusive, but there’s a whole other story which follows what happened leading up to the shock final death.

Here's all you need to know about series two, and a chance to refresh your memory on the story so far.

When is Liar series 2 on TV?

Liar series two will premiere on Monday, March 2 at 9pm on ITV. It continues Mondays at 9pm on ITV.

Who will star in it?

Lead characters Laura Nielson (Joanne Froggatt) and Andrew Earlham (Ioan Gruffudd) are back – which is quite a feat, given that Andrew died at the end of series one.

Joanne is best known for her starring role in Downton Abbey, while Ioan appeared as Reed Richards in the Fantastic Four films.

They’ll be joined by some new characters including DI Karen Renton, played by Katherine Kelly who recently starred in another of writers Harry and Jack Williams’ dramas, Cheat.

We’ll also meet characters Charles and Winnie Peterson, played by Howard Charles, who was in another Williams brothers series The Widow, and former Emmerdale star Amy Nuttall.

What happened in series 1? How did it end?

Liar explored the truth behind a date gone horribly wrong – Andrew Earlham claimed that things had gone well and he had slept with Laura Nielson, while she said that she had been raped by him.

To complicate things further, Laura was also the teacher of Andrew’s teenage son Luke (Jamie Flatters), and had been set up on a date with the surgeon by her sister Katy (Zoë Tapper) who worked with him at the hospital.

As Laura fought to uncover the truth about Andrew and bring him to justice, she opened a huge can of worms which included the discovery that her married sister Katy had been having an affair with Laura’s police officer ex-boyfriend Tom (Warren Brown) just before they split.

Determined to prove that she was not the only woman Andrew had taken advantage of, Laura went in search of information about Andrew’s late wife, and realised his crimes spanned many years and locations.

In one tense scene Laura even broke into Andrew’s house looking for incriminating evidence about a date rape drug she believed he had taken from the hospital.

A nail-biting finale saw Laura head to Andrew’s mother’s house, where she discovered stashed recordings he’d made of his sexual attacks on at least 17 women, including his late wife’s friend and pregnant detective Vanessa Harmon (Shelley Conn) investigating the case.

But she never got her day in court with Andrew, who went on the run and in the final shot, set three weeks later, his as-yet-undiscovered corpse with slit throat was shown lying in the marshes where Laura liked to kayak.

What will happen in series 2?

We know that series two will look at the three weeks that Andrew was missing, and what happened to him between escaping the police and being murdered.

This is how Ioan Gruffudd is managing to return for a second series, as he will appear in flashbacks. As we know it will be the last instalment of Liar, we’re also expecting to find out who killed him.

The new episodes will look at DI Renton’s investigation into the time leading up to Andrew’s murder and who the culprit was – but does anyone really want to see them charged for disposing of such a despicable individual?

Who killed Andrew Earlham?

Suspect #1: Laura Nielson

Laura is doubtless relieved that her attacker is gone, but she was focused on getting justice - discovering Andrew's recordings and handing them over to the police - before Andrew was found dead. 

So it’s unlikely that she was Andrew's killer. Although she has proved herself capable of attacks against Andrew, as she kidnapped and drugged him in the first season to frame him for her own rape.

Speaking ahead of series 2, Joanne hinted that Laura isn't the only character with a motive. She said: "Laura is under suspicion. She feels angry the injustice has carried on and she is now a suspect. Andrew is still haunting her.

"But several characters had a reason to want something terrible to happen to Andrew. It shows how one person's actions have a snowball effect on so many lives."

Suspect #2: Tom Bailey

After losing his job in the police, and ruining his relationship with both Laura and her sister Katy, Tom hasn't got much else to lose.

He worked with Laura in the first series to plant the date rape drug GHB on Andrew, and he clearly is on Laura's side and very protective of her.

Could they have worked together on Andrew's murder?

Suspect #3: Luke Earlham

At first, Luke defended his dad, but by the end of the series, he didn't seem to be convinced by Andrew's lies.

In fact, he seemed distressed at his dad asking him to give a fake alibi to the police.

And with Laura discovering that Andrew emotionally abused his ex-wife - who is Luke's mum - does Luke know more about what his dad is capable of than he's letting on?

Suspect #4: Jennifer Robertson

Soldier Jennifer returned from Iraq in the finale to discover that her girlfriend Vanessa had been raped by Andrew while she was pregnant with their child.

Jennifer - played by Jill Halfpenny - raged at her girlfriend: “I feel like it’s my job to protect you and I wasn’t there."

Does she kill Andrew out of revenge?

Suspect #5: Katy Sutcliffe

Katy betrayed Laura in the ultimate way in the first series, by having an affair with Laura's then-boyfriend Tom. 

Katy's relationship with her husband Liam (Richie Campbell) then fell apart, so like Tom, she has little to lose (although she does still have her job in the NHS).

Katy told her sister that she'd do "anything" for her in the first series. Could Laura have blackmailed Katy into killing Andrew, so she didn't have blood on her hands?

Suspect #6: Carl Peterson

A new character for season 2, Carl (played by Howard Charles) is an army veteran with traditional values, who now makes a living maintaining and repairing boats.

Recently his life was turned upside down, and he’s retreated into himself.

In the first episode of the new series, we see Carl wipe blood off a hook in the boat that Andrew was hiding in.

Then in the second episode, Carl breaks into the boat to confront Andrew - presumably about the previous attack on his wife Winnie (Amy Nuttall).

The episode concludes with Carl setting both the boat and the boathouse on fire. Is he trying to destroy evidence?
