The best family films to watch in the BT TV Player
May 30 | 2 min readIt's one of the all-time great sports films, and now women’s baseball tale A League of Their Own has a TV series of its own.
The 1992 film which starred Geena Davis, Madonna and Tom Hanks has been reinvented with a new cast for a series at Amazon Prime Video, making it one of the most exciting launches for the streaming service this year.
Here’s all you need to know about when you can watch it and who is in the new cast.
What is A League of Their Own about?
Not to be confused with the sports panel show of the same name, this drama series takes its inspiration from the 1992 hit film.
It follows a generation of women who yearned to play professional baseball and the lengths they went to to star in their own league.
Penny Marshall’s film followed a women’s baseball league set up in 1943 in order to retain the interest of the sport's fans when World War II threatened to shut down the men's Major League.
Amazon has promised its new series will “widen the lens to tell the story of an entire generation of women who dreamed of playing professional baseball”, taking a deeper look at race and sexuality in the players joining the league.
Co-creators Abbi Jacobson and Will Graham said: “Twenty-eight years ago, Penny Marshall told us a story about women playing professional baseball that up until then had been largely overlooked.
“We grew up obsessed with the film, like everyone else.”
Adding that they wanted to tell a “new, overlooked set of those stories”, they said: “It took grit, fire, authenticity, wild imagination and a crackling sense of humour for these players to achieve their dreams. We’re hoping to bring audiences a story with all of those qualities.”
Who stars in it?
Co-creator Abbi Jacobson also stars in the series, alongside Chanté Adams, Emmy nominee D'Arcy Carden and Bafta winner Gbemisola Ikumelo.
Other cast members include Kelly McCormack, Roberta Colindrez, and Priscilla Delgado, with recurring guest stars Molly Ephraim, Kate Berlant and Melanie Field.
How can I watch it?
As yet, there’s no date confirmed for the series of hour-long episodes to begin streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
However, the series was greenlit by Amazon in August 2020, so it isn’t thought that there’ll be too long a wait until it’s ready to go.
