I've been asked to "take control" of a SIM. What does this mean?

It means the person who pays the bill for your SIM is giving you control over certain aspects of it. All you need to do is set up a new BT ID for yourself (if you haven't already got one).

By accepting, you'll be able to use your BT ID to:

  • Check how much data and calls you've used by logging in to www.bt.com/mymobile >
  • Get free unlimited BT Wi-fi at millions of UK hotspots so you can connect when you're out and about
  • Download the BT Sport app and watch BT Sport on your smartphone (as long as the person who pays the bill has signed up to BT Sport)

If they've given you "full control" you'll also be able to:

  • Buy and manage your own add-ons, such as 4G Extra speed and data add-ons for when you're abroad
  • Set your own spend caps and parental controls

You can only have full control if you're over 18.

Does this mean I'll start paying the bill?

No. The account holder will keep getting and paying the bills. And they'll continue to own the SIM and the number.

What happens if they don't want to pay for my SIM anymore?

The bill payer has the right to stop any SIM on their account at any time. But if they ask for a stop date more than three days away, then we'll text you with a PIN that'll allow you to take over the SIM yourself and keep your number. (You must be over 18 to do this.)

If you get a takeover PIN, contact us >

If my SIM moves to another account, do I lose control?

Yes. If the person who pays the bill wants to move the SIM to another account, the new bill payer becomes the owner of the SIM and you'll lose the control you were given.

However, your BT ID will remain active so if the new bill payer wants to give you control of the SIM, then you can use it like before. Just ask them to log in to www.bt.com/mymobile and select "Personalise my SIMs".
