Protecting you from scams

Follow our guide to help identify scam phone calls, texts, and emails. You can also learn more about the steps you can take right now to better protect yourself online.

If a possible scammer has obtained your bank details or gained remote access to your computer, please call your bank right away. 

How to spot and handle a scam

The goal of a scammer is to gain access to your sensitive information, such as passwords and bank details. If you think you may be dealing with a scammer, end the conversation and never share any personal information.

Signs of a scam call

  • The caller sounds urgent or threatening.
  • They ask for remote access to your computer.
  • They ask for personal details, passwords or bank details.

 

What to do

  • Hang up.
  • If they claim to be from BT, report the call.
  • If you have Call Protect, block the number.
  • If they claim to be from a respected business, look up the business's number and call back.

  • The email sounds urgent or threatening.
  • There are spelling or grammar mistakes.
  • They ask for personal details, passwords or bank details.

 

What to do

  • Don't click links, open attachments or reply.
  • If it's seemingly from BT, forward as an attachment to phishing@bt.com, if not report@phishing.gov.uk.
  • Then delete the email.
  • Even real-looking emails may have been spoofed.

Signs of a scam text

  • The text sounds urgent or threatening.
  • There are spelling or grammar mistakes.
  • They ask for personal details, passwords or bank details.

 

What to do

  • Don't click on links, reply or text back.
  • If you can see the number, check whether it's genuine by searching online.
  • Forward the text to 7726 so we can help.
  • Delete the text.
