If a possible scammer has obtained your bank details or gained remote access to your computer, please call your bank right away.
How to spot and handle a scam
The goal of a scammer is to gain access to your sensitive information, such as passwords and bank details. If you think you may be dealing with a scammer, end the conversation and never share any personal information.
Signs of a scam call
- The caller sounds urgent or threatening.
- They ask for remote access to your computer.
- They ask for personal details, passwords or bank details.
What to do
- Hang up.
- If they claim to be from BT, report the call.
- If you have Call Protect, block the number.
- If they claim to be from a respected business, look up the business's number and call back.
Signs of a scam email
- The email sounds urgent or threatening.
- There are spelling or grammar mistakes.
- They ask for personal details, passwords or bank details.
What to do
- Don't click links, open attachments or reply.
- If it's seemingly from BT, forward as an attachment to phishing@bt.com, if not report@phishing.gov.uk.
- Then delete the email.
- Even real-looking emails may have been spoofed.

- The text sounds urgent or threatening.
- There are spelling or grammar mistakes.
- They ask for personal details, passwords or bank details.
What to do
- Don't click on links, reply or text back.
- If you can see the number, check whether it's genuine by searching online.
- Forward the text to 7726 so we can help.
- Delete the text.
