BT Sport made history by becoming the UK’s first broadcaster to deliver an event in Dolby Atmos back in January 2017.

Running in conjunction with BT Sport Ultimate, it brings the cinema sound experience to your home as it creates powerful, moving audio that flows around you.

With a plethora of live Premier League and UEFA Champions League football set to be shown on BT Sport in the coming months, here’s the lowdown on how you can watch the games in the best way possible.

What is Dolby Atmos?

Audio is typically constrained to fixed channels when you watch TV, from two stereos or up to seven with Dolby Digital.

But because Dolby Atmos sound moves around in a three-dimensional space, you get an immersive experience, a sense of being in the thick of the action.

How does Dolby Atmos work?

A typical speaker can't replicate the sound a moving object makes in real life.

When you listen to a surround soundtrack on a 5.1- or 7.1- speaker, sounds have been pre-mixed in advance, into channels that roughly match their position around you. Sounds appear to move by swapping between channels, but it can’t go above you or exactly replicate the position of a moving object on a screen.

Dolby Atmos removes these restrictions.

Dolby labels them ‘individual entities called audio objects’ and these ‘audio objects’ are independent of channels, with up to 128 able to be mixed at the same time. With the vertical height channel, objects can also appear to move around above you, which has never been possible before.
