Web Threat Protect helps keep you safe online by blocking websites that could harm your devices or put your personal information at risk.
If you’re seeing warning pages you didn't expect, cannot open certain websites, or something doesn't seem to be working properly, use this guide to understand what’s happening and how to fix the most common issues.
A blocked website still appears in search results
This is expected. Web Threat Protect checks the website you try to open, not the search results page itself. Search engines like Google are safe to use, so their results still appear.
What to do:
- Select the link as normal.
- If the website is harmful, you’ll see a warning page, and access will be blocked.
You’re seeing more than one warning page
You may have more than one security product running on your device, such as Web Threat Protect and Cyber Threat Protect. Each service can show its own warning page.
What to do:
- Check which security tools are installed on your device.
- Decide whether you want to keep both services active or turn one off.
A website you own is being blocked
If Web Threat Protect detects harmful content on a website, it will block access and show a warning page.
What to do:
- Check your website for malicious code or unauthorised changes.
- If you believe the site is safe, email saferbrowsing@bt.com with the website details so we can request further investigation.
- If harmful content is confirmed, ask your website administrator or developer to remove it.
“Continue anyway” does not work
To bypass a warning page, cookies must be enabled, and private browsing must be turned off.
What to do:
- Enable cookies in your browser settings.
- Exit private browsing, such as Incognito mode.
- Try opening the website again.
You selected “Continue anyway” but the warning appears again
This is normal behaviour. The override only applies to a single visit and expires after 3 hours.
What to do:
- Select Continue anyway again if you still want to visit the site.
- You’ll be warned again after 3 hours on the same device to help keep you protected.
Web Threat Protect is stuck or will not turn off
If you cannot disable the service in My BT, it could be an account or browser issue.
What to do:
- Log in to My BT and go to Manage my extras.
- Try turning it off there.
- Allow up to 2 hours for changes to take effect.
If the control does not respond, contact us through the BT Community. Forum moderators can help escalate accounts that appear to be stuck.
