BT Web Protect helps protect you from viruses, scams and phishing attacks by warning you if you're about to visit a potentially harmful website. Once you’ve set it up, BT Web Protect will warn you before you visit a suspicious website, on any of your devices connected to BT Broadband. This will help to keep you safe while browsing online. It also works when you're out and about on any of our five million UK BT Wi-fi hotspots.
Don't worry about downloading software - there's nothing to install. Plus it's free to all our BT Broadband customers.
BT Web Protect will:
- Help prevent viruses, scams and phishing attacks by warning you when you're about to visit a harmful website. You can still click Continue, so it shouldn't stop you from accessing anything you want to
- Work on all your devices - you can use it on any of your laptops, smartphones and tablets that use your home broadband
- It also protects you if you're connected to a BT Wi-fi hotspot in the UK and logged in with your BT ID
BT Web Protect keeps you safe, is free for all customers and shouldn't have any impact on your experience browsing the web. However, if you decide to disable it, just log into your MyBT account and switch it off. It's as simple as that.

BT Virus Protect builds on this, giving you an extra layer of security, both online and offline. It protects against viruses, scams, spyware, phishing attacks and other internet threats.

You'll get a warning page before you go to a site that contains, or might contain, a malware or phishing threat. This will warn you that the site you are going to view may be suspicious. If you have been directed to this page by an unexpected caller, hang up and call us on 0800 800 150.
If you see a blank page, or one saying there has been a connection error, don’t trust the site.
https sites have a secure, encrypted connection – legitimate websites use them to protect data like your credit card information, passwords and other sensitive data. If https sites are used by scammers however, we cannot show our usual warning page. Don’t worry though, we will still protect you from the site – you will just see a blank screen instead.

To get the best protection from known phishing and malware sites, we make sure you're using BT’s network including our 'Domain Name Servers' (DNS for short). DNS are the internet's equivalent of a phone book. They maintain a directory of domain names, for example bbc.co.uk or BT.com, and translate them to Internet Protocol (IP) addresses.
All websites are stored on servers which have IP addresses. DNS is necessary because, although domain names are easy for people to remember, computers and other devices access websites based on IP addresses.
