When you place an order with BT Mobile, you may need to complete the following checks:
- A credit check – this checks your creditworthiness and helps prevent fraudulent orders in your name. You may need to answer questions about your job history and bank account. The check will be recorded on your credit file.
- An identity check – this protects you from identity theft and fraud. You’ll need to answer questions about your personal finances, which will be checked against your credit file.
- A bank check – this ensures the details you’ve given match those held by our credit reference agency, Equifax.
We don’t store your information. Equifax checks it. If you have any questions about your credit file, speak directly to Equifax.
For full details on the information we collect for these checks, please see our Privacy Policy.

Why did my credit check fail?
Sometimes the results from Equifax don’t meet our criteria for a BT Mobile plan.
We can't see any of the personal information you gave for the credit rating. So if you think the outcome isn't right or you have any questions, you'll need to get in touch with Equifax.
Why do I need to pay a deposit?
If your credit check doesn’t meet our criteria, we may ask for a deposit to sign up for your chosen plan. It's normal to ask for this and doesn't affect your credit profile in any way. We’ll refund your deposit after six months.
This deposit is separate from any upfront costs we may ask for in relation to the BT Mobile Phone plan you choose.
Why did my identity check fail?
Based on the answers you gave, Equifax couldn't verify your identity. To protect you, we don't let you carry on ordering BT Mobile (although you can order other BT products). Because we can't see your credit file, we can't comment on your answers to each question.
You'll need to get in touch with Equifax about your credit rating and how it's calculated.
Why did the bank check fail?
The bank details you gave didn't match the details Equifax have on file. To protect you from fraud, we don't let you carry on with your order.
