To continue receiving emails update your BT email settings now

We're updating our email service to offer an improved experience for all our customers. This means you'll no longer be able to sign in using Yahoo servers.

What do I need to do?

It’s vital you take action now.

  • If you use a computer program or mobile device for your emails, update your incoming and outgoing server settings to mail.btinternet.com. Otherwise you won’t be able to receive emails
  • The Yahoo Mail app is no longer supported. You’ll have to link your BT email account to your smartphone’s own email app to continue to access email on your mobile. Go to your device's app store to download a new email app
  • Webmail users should log in at www.bt.com/email and update the bookmarks in your browser

How do I change my settings?

No matter which email protocol you use, the steps are broadly the same. You’ll need to update something called SMTP settings – these govern how your email programme sends and receives emails. We recommend using IMAP with SSL enabled, as this keeps a copy of all your emails on the server. For help setting this up, see Setting up your email >

If you're using IMAP to receive emails and your device was originally set up with Yahoo, then you can’t update your settings, so you'll need to delete your account and add it again.

We’ll show you how depending on which email programme you use.

If your device is using POP 3 (which we don’t recommend), your emails are stored on your device rather than on a server. (You can find out if your device uses IMAP or POP 3 here.) To reduce the risk of losing anything stored on your device, and before you update your settings, it's very important you:

  1. Check our webmail - Sign in to www.bt.com/email and you’ll see the emails saved on our server. If all the emails you need to keep are there, you can safely delete your existing account and set up a new one with the correct settings. If some of your emails appear to be missing, this will be because they're saved on your POP3 device.
  2. Back up your emails - use your email device to create a back-up of your locally stored email

Once you've done this, you'll need to update your POP3 settings to mail.btinternet.com. If you're unable to edit the existing Yahoo settings, you should create a new mail.internet.com account and move your emails to it before deleting the Yahoo account from your device.

If you use Calendar and have Contacts, you’ll also need to update the settings that are used to synchronise your Calendar and Contacts with your devices. You’ll find more advice on how to do this in the Welcome email we’ll send you once we’ve upgraded you to our new email service.
