UFC Fight Night - Prelims
Sep 24A mammoth UFC 280 card is almost upon us this Saturday night with an absolute feast of MMA action coming your way.
The lightweight title will be on the line when former champion Charles Oliveira looks to reclaim the belt he lost on the scales last time out, taking on the indomitable Islam Makhachev in a scintillating main event.
Both men will be on the stage this afternoon exchanging pleasantries to set the table for one of the all-time great title clashes this weekend; it will be the first time two fighters with double-digit winning streaks have met in the UFC, pitting the most dominant lightweights in the division against one another.
They’ll also be joined by two men who won’t waste their time on the mic as Aljamain Sterling and TJ Dillashaw engage in some verbal warfare before the Octagon door closes on their bantamweight title clash.
Sterling has not shied away from letting his feelings be known about the former champ Dillashaw, who recently returned to the sport after a much-publicised two-year suspension for using performance enhancing drugs.
But Dillashaw, 36, shot back this week, suggesting Sterling’s was already mentally reckoning with defeat ahead of their fight on Saturday night.
He's creating an excuse to why he's going to lose already
- TJ Dillashaw
“He knows he’s got this fight in front of him,” Dillashaw said.
“He knows he’s got me that’s going to be standing right in front of him that’s going to rip his f****** head off, and he’s creating an excuse to why he’s going to lose already.”
And one of the UFC’s great showmen, Sean O’Malley, will also be on stage this afternoon as he counts down the hours until he faces the biggest challenge of his UFC career yet in the form of Petr Yan.
UFC boss Dana White hinted their bantamweight contest this weekend could even be an eliminator for the next crack at the 135lb title.
Never one to hold back on his opinions, O’Malley weighed in with his thoughts on the championship showdown in his division, suggesting he’d much rather face TJ Dillashaw in a huge contest next year after defeating Yan.
Lightweights Beneil Dariush and Mateusz Gamrot will preview their scintillating showdown – which may even steal the show by the time the curtain comes down on Saturday evening – while Katlyn Chookagian and Manon Fiorot are also expected to speak to the media at the press conference.
