Chelsea Fan’s Premier League Season Preview
After winning the Champions League, there's a buzz around Stamford Bridge and fans are optimistic ahead of Thomas Tuchel's first full campaign in charge.
Ahead of a brand new season of Premier League football on BT Sport, we spoke to fans of each and every team about their expectations for what lies ahead over the next nine months.
We won the Champions League and now we’ve got to win the Premier League.
Last year was a bit of a dodgy season because we were fighting for top four and a lot of people said we got lucky in the end, but now we have to show England that we are the best team.
Chelsea have the best youth team in England, possibly in Europe and one of the reasons Frank Lampard was loved is because he played Reece James and Mason Mount. You want to see that connection so I hope we get some more English and youth players given their chance in the first team.
Thomas Tuchel plays a mixture of Sarri-ball and the way Antonio Conte set the team up. He defends with five at the back and then pushes them all forward when we attack, so he’s found the correct balance. But last season we didn’t win a game by more than 2-0 so it shows that if we had a top striker then we’d be smashing more teams.
Now Tuchel has won the Champions League he is probably asking for full control and Chelsea managers don’t get that, they are coaches.
Tuchel got sacked from Paris Saint-Germain because he fell out with the board. The PSG board are like Chelsea’s in that they have control over the transfers, so it’s possible they might have problems.
But Tuchel came to Chelsea knowing they have a sacking culture. He arrived on a one-year contract and he said in the introductory press conference that he was concerned about that, but he backed himself to get an extension with hard work.
The midfield also needs to figure itself out. We still don’t know what our best combination is and other teams are developing better chemistry while we are swapping N’Golo Kante, Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic in and out. We can’t just keep relying on Kante because when you take him out the team we are like a polo – no middle.
Most important player
N'Golo Kante. He’s by far the best player in the squad and maybe the best defensive midfielder in the world. He wins the ball, runs back, passes, tackles, presses... he does a bit of everything. His performance won us the Champions League final and even Man City’s Twitter account posted: “Kante is everywhere!”.
Plus he’s a brilliant role model. He’s won two Premier League titles, won the World Cup and now the Champions League but you never see anything bad about him in the press. He’s someone who players can look up to and respect.
Armando Broja. He’s only 19 but he’s already an Albania international.
He’s very fast and was one of the top scorers in the youth leagues. I don’t want to see him go out loan, especially if we don’t buy a top striker this season.
He may be on the bench because we’ve got rid of Olivier Giroud and I don’t see Michy Batshuayi getting a chance so he could be used as a substitute for now and in a few years develops into the main option. NOTE: Broja has since joined Southampton on loan.
What I’ve missed the most
I miss the fans. Especially as someone who is involved in football both for work and for pleasure, I go to every home and most away games and it’s like a community.
It takes us about ten minutes to get in and get to our seats at Stamford Bridge because we are talking to everyone. I even miss the banter with the visiting away fans too.
1st – We’ve got the cockiness of being the champions of Europe. We’ve beaten the best, we’ve shown we’ve got what it takes to beat Man City so there’s no reason why we can’t win the Premier League.
When Tuchel came in mid-season he had to first get rid of Lampard’s philosophy but now with him starting from day one with a pre-season, he can see the whole squad and he’ll be able to know his best team. I’m really confident for this season.
