Chelsea Women manager Emma Hayes believes England's victorious Euro 2022 stars don't fully appreciate how their lives will change after beating Germany. 

Sarina Wiegman's side sealed a first major trophy for an England side since 1966, with Wembley in raptures following Sunday's momentous victory. 

Hayes was in attendance at the national stadium to watch the team make history and helps put into context the whirlwind journey that some of the younger players have been on.

"I don’t know yet if they fully understand what they’ve done and if they fully understand how their lives are going to change," Hayes said on Michael Calvin's Football People podcast, part of the new BT Sport Pods series. 

"You say mine’s going to change – I don’t think mine’s going to change drastically because I’ve been gradually been building towards this point and I’m 45 years of age.

"[It’s] a little bit different from a 21-year-old who’s going from finishing full-time education two years ago to being a first-time pro a year ago, to now being on the front pages or back pages of the Daily Mail for the right, and maybe even sometimes the wrong reasons."

 

Hayes, whose Chelsea side are looking to make it four Women's Super League titles in a row, also paid tribute to the men's side for being role models and urged fans not to compare the achievements of the two senior teams. 

"I think our men's team deserve a lot of credit, I really do. I think they deserve a lot of credit for what an England team can look like. I think they've led the way," she added.

"We always like to batter or compare. So many times I hear: 'Oh the men have fallen at the final hurdle.'

"No comparisons; I think England's national teams are in a completely different era, and sitting there with Mason Mount and Phil Foden – I was sat next to them [during the final] – they were overwhelmed with emotion and joy for those players, and I believe they have a lot of credit too for showing what it's like to play for an England team."
