Champions League 2020/21 Matchday 3: Reports, match replays and highlights for Tuesday’s games

This year's whirlwind tournament sees a third Champions League Matchday in three weeks kick off exclusively live on BT Sport.

Tuesday night saw Premier League giants Liverpool and Manchester City in action, as well as a raft of other unmissable ties including Real Madrid v Inter Milan and RB Salzburg v Bayern Munich.

Luis Suarez might feel he could have won the game for Atletico Madrid as they were held to a draw by a resolute Lokomotiv Moscow.

Atleti had taken the lead through Jose Gimenez's header from the edge of the penalty area - but the Russian hosts levelled shortly before half-time when Hector Herrera was harshly adjuged to have handled in his own penalty area.

Aleksey Miranchuk swiftly dispatched the resulting spot kick with Diego Simeone left fuming at the decision.

Luis Suarez, also booked for dissent in the aftermath of the penalty incident, missed a glaring opportunity with a close range header midway through the second 45 and Coke rattled the woodwork with a header of his own during an absorbing half.

Joao Felix also had a handful of half-chances - including a stunning long-range effort that was wonderfully saved - but Lokomotiv held on for a good point at home. 

Shakhtar Donetsk 0-6 Borussia Monchengladbach - Watch replay

Gladbach had surrendered the lead twice in their previous two Champions League games coming into this one but they made absolutely sure of the points with a rampant performance against Shakhtar in Ukraine.

French forward Alassane Plea helped himself to a hat-trick - including a rocket from distance - as the German visitors cruised to victory over their lethargic hosts.

Marco Rose's team now go above Shakhtar in Group B in what could be a significant result as the race for qualification hots up.

Atalanta 0-5 Liverpool - Watch replay

Diogo Jota stole the headlines as he scored a maiden Liverpool hat-trick to help his side trounce Atalanta in a game many felt they could struggle in prior to kick-off.

The Reds fashioned countless chances as they took full advantage of the home side's high line to run riot in Bergamo - although Alisson was forced into a number of good saves by the Italians' creative forward line.

Duvan Zapata was denied a brilliant solo goal by the angle of the woodwork but 23-year-old Jota goes home with the match ball after a clinical display of finishing.

The former Wolves man was withdrawn late on after suffering a knock; Liverpool fans will be hoping it's nothing serious ahead of the trip to Man City at the weekend. 

Manchester City 3-0 Olympiacos- Watch replay

Manchester City took a huge stride towards qualification for the knockout stages with a one-sided thumping of Olympiacos at the Etihad Stadium.

Ferran Torres' first-half strike had afforded the visitors a flattering 1-0 scoreline for the majority of the match until late strikes by Gabriel Jesus and Joao Cancelo ensured City got what they deserved as 3-0 winners.

The Greek champions offered little in attack and toiled for long periods of the match, happy for the home side to dominate possession.

City now sit top of Group C with a flawless record at the halfway mark of the group stage. 

Real Madrid 3-2 Inter Milan - Watch replay

A must-win game at the Alfredo Di Stefano Stadium proved to be an entertaining affair as Real Madrid triumphed thanks to a late winner by substitute Rodrygo.

The home side had gone two goals ahead of Antonio Conte's visiting Inter only to be pegged back thanks to strikes by Lautaro Martinez and Ivan Perisic.

And it looked as though an unhelpful draw was on the cards for both sides until Madrid's two young Brazilian substitutes combined when Vinicius Jr teed up Rodrygo, who smashed a late winner into the top corner to secure a vital win.

Madrid now leapfrog Inter in Group B and go level on points with Shakhtar Donetsk behind leaders Borussia Monchengladbach.

RB Salzburg 2-6 Bayern Munich - Watch replay

Four goals in the last 10 minutes flattered a Bayern Munich side who had previously been made to sweat by an adventurous Salzburg in Austria.

The defending champions went behind in the tie early on as Mergim Berisha lashed Salzburg into an early lead but Bayern hit back through Robert Lewandowski's 21st-minute spot kick.

A minute before the interval, Rasmus Kristensen put into his own net to hand Bayern a cruel lead but Salzburg restored parity through substitute Masaya Okugawa in the 66th minute.

It stayed that way until Jerome Boateng's 79th-minute header sparked an avalanche of late goals that skewed an otherwise tight affair.

Porto 3-0 Marseille - Watch replay

It looks like French giants Marseille's return to the Champions League will be a brief one as they were thumped again on a miserable night in Portugal.

Sergio Conceicao's Porto seized control of second spot in Group C as goals from Moussa Marega, Sergio Oliveira and Luis Diaz helped them to a deserved victory.

Former West Ham man Dmitri Payet missed a first half spot kick for Marseille after Chelsea loanee Malang Sarr had felled Florian Thauvin in the box.

Marseille are yet to score in the competition this year and it looks a long way back for Andre Villas-Boas' men to entertain thoughts of qualifying for the knockout stages now.

Midtjylland 1-2 Ajax - Watch replay

Midtjylland will be kicking themselves after conceding a goal within the opening minute that helped Ajax to a narrow victory in Denmark.

Dusan Tadic then added a second 15 minutes later as it threatened to turn into a difficult evening for the Danes - but Brian Priske's men fought back to equalise in the 20th minute through Anders Dreyer.

Both sides had chances throughout the rest of an entertaining game at the MCH Arena but Ajax held on to claim a vital win that moved them level on points with Atalanta in a competitive Group D table.
