Mahmoud Charr has emerged as Tyson Fury's likely next opponent for what would be the Gypsy King's first fight since "retiring" after his sixth-round TKO of Dillian Whyte at Wembley Stadium. 

Two-time heavyweight world champion Fury - who still holds the WBC belt having relinquished his Ring magazine title following the win over Whyte - announced on Monday 26 September that his planned fight against Anthony Joshua was off after his domestic rival had failed to meet a deadline to sign the fight contracts. 

Instead, it seems that the 34-year-old has identified Charr as his next opponent on Saturday 3 December instead, with the venue reportedly set to be Cardiff's Principality Stadium.

Mahmoud Charr: Early life and amateur career

Born in Beirut, Lebanon, in 1984, Charr moved to Germany as a child and quickly demonstrated his vast array of fighting skills.

He made waves in Muay Thai, becoming the country's youngest-ever national champion in 2003 while still a teenager, as well as winning several regional boxing titles. 

Two years later, he became both German and European champion in Thai boxing, having secured the Western German boxing title in 2004. 

However, his focus then switched solely to boxing, and he turned professional in 2005.

Charr's professional record stands at 33 wins and four losses. 

After steadily building his career in Germany and claiming the WBC International Silver heavyweight title, Charr accepted his first professional fight outside his adopted homeland when he faced WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko in Moscow in 2012 as the Ukrainian looked to retain his belt for the ninth time. 

Klitschko duly won with a fourth-round TKO in what proved to be his final fight, dealing Charr his first professional loss. 

Undeterred, Charr returned to Germany to scoop the vacant WBC Mediterranean heavyweight title, knocking out Konstantin Airich in the first round in Cologne. 

Subsequent victories over Yakup Saglam and Oleksey Mazikin saw Charr defend his two titles and came either side of a planned fight with David Haye in June 2013 that fell through due to the Briton sustaining a hand injury.

Charr carried on picking wins, recording a fifth-round stoppage of Denis Bakhtov that saw him pick up the WBC CIS and Slovenian Boxing Bureau title, as well as the WBC Baltic belt.

That victory set up a meeting with Alexander Povetkin for the WBC International heavyweight title, with Charr losing by knockout in the seventh round. 

What followed in the next couple of years was a series of inconsistent results, before Charr finally got his hands on the belt that had eluded him against Povetkin by taking advantage of its vacant status to defeat Sefer Seferi in September 2016. 

Charr then claimed the WBA (Regular) heavyweight title by winning a 12-round fight - the only one in his professional career - against Alexander Ustinov the following year. 

Charr's career then petered out as he tested positive for anabolic steroids drostanolone and trenbolone, forcing the cancellation of his 2018 defence of his WBA (Regular) title against Fres Oquendo. 

Charr was stripped of that particular belt in 2021 due to inactivity, before winning his last two fights later that year.

Despite Charr's strong career, a fight with Fury would be the most lucrative the 37-year-old has ever had. 

Posting on Instagram, Charr warned Fury to "take of your body fat boy", and the German told his potential opponent that he had "made a good decision to fight the best. We will give our fans the best show ever - make sure you are ready."

Fury is up for the challenge, posting: "Looking forward to fighting a man who wants to fight and has fire and desire.
