Astros vs Phillies: Road to the World Series
On Friday evening, the eyes of the sporting world will be trained on Minute Maid Park, Philadelphia, as Game One of the 118th Fall Classic gets under way - live on BT Sport.
The Philadelphia Phillies are in the World Series for the first time since 2009.
The Fightin’ Phils are hoping to hoist the Commissioner's Trophy aloft for the third time in their 139-year history.
The Phillies beat the San Diego Padres 4-3 in Philadelphia to win the National League Championship Series 4-1.
Meanwhile the Houston Astros are back in the World Series for the second time in two years.
The Astros will be vying for their second championship in the last six years and second in franchise history.
After a rain delay in the Bronx, the Astros edged out Araron Judge's New York Yankees 6-5 to sweep the American League Championship Series 4-0 and set up a shot at redemption.
After finishing with the best record in the American League, Houston are yet to lose a post-season game in 2022, sweeping the Seattle Mariners 3-0 in the Division Series before overwhelming the Yankees.
Earlier, the Phillies were celebrating on home turf at Citizens Bank Park as they saw off the Padres to end their 13-year wait for another World Series appearance.
Designated hitter Bryce Harper, who hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning to bring the Phillies back from 3-2 down, was named as the most valuable player of the NLCS.
Philadelphia had been the lowest-ranked team to qualify for the postseason, but overcame the St Louis Cardinals 2-0 in their Wild Card series, and then the defending champion Atlanta Braves 3-1 in the NL Division Series.
Key players to watch out for
Bryce Harper, Philadelphia Phillies
Harper is one of baseball’s biggest stars, but he will be on baseball’s biggest stage for the first time in his life on Friday night when the Phillies play the Astros in Game 1 of the World Series at Minute Maid Park.
The 30-year-old heads into the World Series off the back of one of the best post-seasons in MLB history. Harper has hit five home runs in his last 11 games, including a match-winning performance in the National League Championship Series against the Padres.
Harper entered 2022 without a play-off series win under his belt but all that pressure evaporated with his Pennant-clinching home run last Sunday.
Harper's career has been filled with a lot of ups, some downs, but he is finally starting to fulfil the potential he has a true generational talent.
Justin Verlander, Houston Astros
Justin Verlander, arguably the best pitcher in baseball right now, is coming off one of the best seasons of his career.
While he has only faced the Phillies once this season, he was imperious in that appearance. Verlander gave up no hits and recorded 10 strikeouts asThe Astros ran out 10-0 victors
With his power and command on the mound, Verlander could be the key to The Astros avenging last season's World Series heartbreak.
