We’re saying goodbye to 3G in 2024

All UK mobile network operators have committed to closing their 3G networks. At BT/EE, we’ll start to say goodbye to 3G from January 2024 so that we can focus on strengthening our newer and more reliable 4G and 5G networks giving a better connectivity experience to our customers.

The switch off isn’t just happening in the UK. 3G networks are being switched off across the world – meaning that if your device doesn’t support 4G or 5G, then you may not be able to make calls (including to the emergency services) or use data roaming while abroad.

By now, you may have heard from us about our switch off plans and how you could be impacted. This page will help you understand why our 3G network is being switch off and how you can stay connected to a quicker, more reliable 4G or 5G network.

What does the switch off of 3G mean for customers?

Switching off our 3G network will offer our customers a better connectivity experience when communicating with loved ones and using their device across the UK.

Our 4G and 5G networks come with loads of great benefits, from faster speeds, better reliability and will futureproof you for years to come.

If you are still using a 3G device, you will no longer be able to access our 3G network resulting in no data service access after 3G is switched off. This means you will no longer be able to access the internet or messaging apps such as WhatsApp. You will still be able to make calls and texts on our 2G network.

We don’t want you to lose your connection and are here to help you with additional support, handy FAQ’s and a Customer Care team ready to answer any questions you may have.

Our first switch off location was Warrington

Warrington was the first town where we switched off our 3G network. Warrington will no longer have 3G from the 18th July 2023.

We communicated to anyone potentially impacted back in June 2023 offering 30 days’ notice to the switch off with next steps on how you can stay connected. If you need support on what to do, please call 0330 123 4150 and our friendly advisors will support you through the change.

How can I upgrade my handset?

If your phone isn't compatible with 4G Calling or WiFi Calling, you could consider upgrading your device. You can’t upgrade to a BT Mobile Handset Plan anymore but you can upgrade your handset with a new plan with EE. Simply call us on 0330 123 4150 to talk through what plans we have for you. Also if you have BT Halo, EE will double your data.

The power of 4G & 5G

BT Mobile benefits from EE’s network which has been awarded the UK’s Best Network for 9 and a half years in a row by RootMetrics. Switching to 4G or 5G means you will experience the UK’s Most Reliable Network.

Whether you use 4G or 5G, you’ll enjoy the benefits of improved quality calls (meaning fewer calls dropping), and much better internet speeds. So, you’ll find it easier to stay in touch with friends and family and do everything you love online. With EE you’ll have a more reliable connection - even in the busiest places.

Emergency alerts

Emergency Alerts is a service from the UK government to warn you if there’s a danger to life nearby. In an emergency, your phone or tablet will receive an alert with advice about how to stay safe. Phones and tablets connected to a 2G or 3G network will not receive emergency alerts so it’s important to update your device to 4G or 5G to continue to receive these alerts.

How can you get ready for the 3G switch off?

If you already have a 4G or 5G device, you don’t need to do anything and can continue to enjoy the UKs best network.
