What is my IP address?

Every device connected to the internet has a unique IP address. An IP address is a set of four numbers separated by dots, like 193.113.57.20. It identifies your device and the network it’s on.

Your BT Broadband IP address is dynamic. Static IPs stay the same, while dynamic IPs change each time you connect.

One way to achieve a static IP address with BT is a business line. Static IP addresses are not available to residential customers.

A static IP address is helpful if you need a fixed, unchanging address for your devices. It makes remote access easier, allows you to host services like websites or VPNs, and improves reliability for applications such as VoIP or gaming.

Businesses often prefer static IPs for security because they can whitelist specific addresses. However, they can cost more, require manual setup, and may pose a higher security risk if compromised, since the address never changes.
