Traffic management and net neutrality

Net neutrality is the principle that Internet Service Providers (ISPs) should manage all data or traffic carried on their networks in the same way, irrespective of what it is or who is using it. This means that ISPs can't block, slow down or favour particular content or traffic, except where traffic management is needed, or in exceptional circumstances (legal or extreme network congestion). In the UK, this is a legislative requirement under the Open Internet Access Regulation.

What is traffic management?

To ensure that networks operate efficiently and that all customers get the best service available, some internet providers slow down different types of traffic at certain times. This is known as 'traffic management' and each type of traffic, regardless of source (for example, Skype and Facetime), should be treated equally.

BT’s approach to traffic management

We’re pleased to say that our business broadband packages don't have any speed restrictions. So, if you're on one of our packages, you don't need to worry about us slowing you down. It doesn't matter how much you upload or download, even at peak times. We won't slow down peer-to-peer file sharing either.

In order to give you the best possible service on the products you buy from us, we only prioritise VoIP services (Cloud Voice) while it’s actively in use on your line. So if you're on a call using VoIP, then this will take priority over other internet activity to ensure you have an uninterrupted call.

Traffic management key facts indicator

Our key facts indicator (KFI) gives an overview of how traffic management affects our products. It doesn't cover events outside of our control that may impact on network congestion levels.

What if BT changes what is traffic managed?

If we do change the way we manage our traffic to ensure the best possible experience for all our customers, you'll be able to read about it on this site, which will always have the latest information.
