Brace yourself. SAS: Red Notice is a two-hour electrifying action thriller with bagfuls of explosions, dollops of tension and a sprinkling of James Bond-esque sass from leading man Sam Heughan.

Based on the Andy McNab Tom Buckingham series, Red Notice pits Heughan’s special forces operator against a psychopathic mercenary Grace Lewis (Ruby Rose) in a dramatic Channel Tunnel showdown.

Imagine Speed, Die Hard and vintage James Bond, all thrown together with an impossibly good looking cast and a few juicy twists and you're somewhere close to the big, bouncing ball of energy that this film generates.

1. Heughan... Sam Heughan

His performances in Outlander, those cheekbones and his action man credentials mean that Heughan’s name frequently does the rounds during discussions on casting the next James Bond.

Playing Tom Buckingham is the perfect audition for the English spy. Buckingham is an impossibly charming, deadly assassin who manages to look debonair even when in the heat of action - the Scottish actor ticks all the right boxes to make a cracking 007 in this film.

2. The cast list is jaw-dropping

Heughan is joined by an incredible ensemble, including Hannah John-Kamen (The Stranger, Ant-Man & The Wasp) as love interest Dr Sophie Hart and Ruby Rose (Batwoman, John Wick) as the intimidating and seemingly unstoppable Grace Lewis.

Tom Hopper (The Umbrella Academy), Noel Clarke (Brotherhood) and a foul-mouthed scene-stealing Andy Serkis all bring their usual class to the adventure and even the film’s smaller cameos come from established acting legends such as Tom Wilkinson (Batman Begins) and British acting royalty Anne Reid.

3. The 80s-style explosive action

Although Red Notice does dabble in the psychology of psychopaths in the head-to-head between Buckingham and Grace Lewis, at this film’s heart it’s a classic 80s style, no-nonsense, action romp.

It dishes up all the sequences and tropes you’d expect  - Buckingham rescuing a child, Buckingham trapped between saving the day and saving his girlfriend, slimy politicians and secret moles leaking info to the enemy – but it does all of them with such enthusiasm and chutzpah that you won’t care that you’ve seen some of these twists and turns before.
