If you’re already still missing Line of Duty, then Vigil is just the thing to get your teeth into.

Starring the bent-copper thriller's own Martin Compston and Doctor Foster star Suranne Jones, Vigil centres on a murder investigation aboard a creepy submarine in the deep sea, spanning the Navy and the British security services in its wide-ranging search for answers.

We’re so excited to get stuck in to Vigil – and with a start date now confirmed, here’s everything you need to know about its plot, cast and when it’s on TV.

What is Vigil about?

The mysterious disappearance of a Scottish fishing trawler and a death aboard Trident nuclear submarine HMS Vigil align for an investigation that delves deeper than detectives could have realised.

DCI Amy Silva is nominated to lead the police investigation into the submarine death, a daunting prospect as she is lowered into the waters to join the remaining crew who are still out at sea.

Her detective work both at sea and on land pits the police against the Navy and security services to uncover a conspiracy that threatens the very heart of Britain’s nuclear deterrent.

Writer Tom Edge said: “The ‘Continuous At Sea Deterrent’, better known as ‘Trident’, has been a contentious part of national life for half a century now, a stock of nuclear missiles kept hundreds of feet below the sea surface.

“But this world has rarely been explored on screen. I can’t wait to take a BBC One audience down with us, into the pitch-black icy waters of the unseen Atlantic, where tomorrow’s geopolitical struggles are already being played out.”

Who is in the cast?

Vigil Martin Compston BBC

Starring as DCI Amy Silva is Suranne Jones, who said: “Tom Edge has created a thrill of a story, set in a world I knew nothing about.

“Amy Silva is a brilliantly complex character, thrown into a highly charged situation where her authority is weakened.

“We watch as she navigates her own personal trauma and loss, all at a time when she’s questioning her relationships and life choices. It feels fresh and relevant.”

Jones is best known for her roles in Doctor Foster, Gentleman Jack and Coronation Street.

Rose Leslie and Gary Lewis in Vigil BBC

She’s joined by Rose Leslie (Game Of Thrones, The Good Fight) as DS Kirsten Longacre.

The cast also includes Line of Duty star Martin Compston, Endeavour and Whitechapel’s Shaun Evans, Anjli Mohindra (Bodyguard, Bancroft), and Paterson Joseph (The Leftovers, Peep Show).

Also look out for Connor Swindells (Sex Education, Jamestown), Adam James (Belgravia, Doctor Foster), and Gary Lewis (His Dark Materials, Billy Elliot).
