Stumptown is an addictive and rollicking good fun new crime drama series.

Starring Cobie Smulders as marine-turned-PI Dex Parios, the series focuses on Dex’s battles with PTSD, gambling and a chaotic love life.

Based on a comic book series from Greg Rucka, the show has wit, warmth and takes viewers on some surprising detours around crime drama clichés.

Set in Portland, Oregon – the city nicknamed Stumptown since residents cleared the land quickly, leaving masses of tree stumps – the series has an impressive cast joining Smulders for the ride.

Dex Parios (played by Cobie Smulders)

Dexis a former marine, who served in Afghanistan and she is still struggling to deal with what she experienced while serving multiple tours.

She’s turned cynical after everything she saw and lost and still suffers flashbacks at times of high stress.

In Stumptown, Dex takes on the role of a private investigator to help deal with her gambling debts and look after her brother Ansel.

Canadian actress Cobie Smulders is best known for playing Robin in the smash hit sitcom How I Met Your Mother and agent Maria Hill in various Marvel movies such as The Avengers and Avengers: Endgame.

Grey McConnell (Jake Johnson)

Grey is one of Dex’s few true friends, who provides some balance and reason amid her frantic life.

He owns a bar and employs her brother Cole.

Jake Johnson is best known for playing Nick in New Girl, Lowery Cruthers in Jurassic World and voicing the web-slinging hero in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

Detective Miles Hoffman (Michael Ealy)

A member of the Portland police who strikes up a connection with Dex on a professional and personal basis in episode one.

He spots Dex’s crime-solving potential and turns to her for help frequently, even if she’s far from traditional when it comes to tackling cases.

You may have seen Ealy previously in Barbershop, 2 Fast 2 Furious, The Intruder, TV drama The Following or season three of HBO’s Westworld.

Sue Lynn Blackbird (Tantoo Cardinal)

Sue Lynn owns the Whispering Winds Casino, where Dex has racked up some hefty debts with her gambling habits.

Dex and Sue have lots of complex history, but she does turn to the army veteran in episode one when her daughter goes missing.

Tantoo is an established and celebrated Canadian TV and film star, who you may have seen recently in the series Outland, Godless and Longmire.

Ansel Parios (Cole Sibus)

Dex’s younger brother has Down’s Syndrome, loves soccer and works at Grey’s bar.

He has a strong bond with Grey, who he hangs out with when Dex isn’t around.

A newcomer to the acting world, Cole is also a Special Olympics athlete who plays softball and swims.

Tookie (Adrian Martinez)

A Portland taco stand owner, Tookie knows everything that is happening on the streets. A useful ally and informant for Dex, he builds a strong bond with the PI.

You may previously have seen Adrian Martinez in Kick-Ass, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty TV series The Blacklist or in the role of Elliot in Disney’s recent remake of Lady and the Tramp.

Lt. Cosgrove (Camryn Manheim)

Cosgrove is Hoffman’s boss and has a more conflicted relationship with Dex. She has also has history with Sue Lynn Blackbird and her casino, who don’t want to work alongside the police.
