If you’ve already binge watched The Boys, Smallville and Arrow on Amazon Prime Video, you might want to add a new superhero TV show to your watchlist.

DC’s Stargirl - from the co-creator of The Flash and Batwoman - is coming to the service this month after being announced as the official UK home of the series.

But unlike The Boys, the stellar series about a teen superhero has been described by US critics as "delightful fun [that] the whole family can enjoy."

Here, we reveal everything we know about the UK launch of Stargirl...

Plus, don’t miss the best of what to watch on Amazon Prime Video this month and the best superhero TV shows on Netflix.

When is Stargirl released in the UK?

Stargirl originally aired on American streaming service DC Universe and channel The CW in the States earlier in 2020.

UK fans will be able to watch the full series of Stargirl when it launches on Amazon Prime Video on Friday, August 21. Prime membership required.

All 13 episodes of Stargirl will be available to binge watch in one go when it launches.

What is Stargirl about?

Stargirl is based on the DC Comics character of the same name, and follows high school student Courtney Whitmore.

Courtney (aka Stargirl) is smart, athletic and above all else, kind. This high school teenager’s seemingly perfect life hits a major speed bump when her mother gets married and her new family moves from Los Angeles, California, to Blue Valley, Nebraska.

Struggling to adapt to a new school and deal with a new step-family, Courtney discovers her step-father Pat has a secret; he used to be the sidekick to superhero Starman (Joel McHale), a member of the disbanded Justice Society of America super team.

After inheriting the long-lost hero’s Cosmic Staff, Courtney becomes the unlikely inspiration for a new generation of the Justice Society of America superheroes.

Who’s in the Stargirl cast?

American actress Brec Bassinger (Bella and the Bulldogs, The Haunted Hathaways) plays the lead role of Courtney Whitmore / Stargirl. She stars alongside Luke Wilson (Old School, That '70s Show - below) as her stepfather, Pat Dugan / S.T.R.I.P.E.

The rest of the main cast includes Yvette Monreal as Yolanda Montez / Wildcat, Anjelika Washington as Beth Chapel / Dr. Mid-Nite, Cameron Gellman as Rick Tyler / Hourman, Trae Romano as Mike Dugan, and Jake Austin Walker as Henry King Jr.

We also see Hunter Sansone as Cameron Mahkent, Meg DeLacy as Cindy Burman / Shiv, Neil Jackson as Jordan Mahkent / Icicle, Christopher James Baker as Dr. Henry King Sr. / Brainwave and Amy Smart as Barbara Whitmore.

How does Stargirl fit in with the rest of the DC Universe?

Stargirl first appeared in the DC Comics series in the late 1990s, and the character has appeared in various TV series since then including Smallville (where she was played by Britt Irvin) and Legends of Tomorrow (played by Sarah Grey), as well as numerous animated TV series.

Stargirl also brings with it a new version of the legendary Justice Society of America, one of the oldest superhero teams in comics, arriving in “All-Star Comics” No. 3 in 1940, according to StarTribune.com

The 2020 TV series Stargirl was created by Geoff Johns - who created the original comic book character. It’s produced by Greg Berlanti - who also produces other DC Comics shows on The CW, including Arrow and The Flash.

The character of Stargirl featured in the Arrowverse (essentially a shared universe of DC characters and TV shows) crossover event "Crisis on Infinite Earths", however the event concluded with the multiverse being destroyed and all of the Arrowverse shows being consolidated into a single surviving Earth (PrimeTimer).

So, Stargirl is not officially part of the Arrowverse yet, but watch this space because series creator Geoff Johns has hinted that Stargirl might eventually cross over with the Arrowverse - but definitely not this season.

Speaking about possible future crossovers in an interview with IGN, Johns said, "The future is wide open in the DC multiverse, so anything can happen between film and TV. Who knows? Because that's what the multiverse is."

Is there a Stargirl season 2?

Stargirl season 2 is definitely happening after The CW renewed the show for a second series.

As confirmed by Deadline in July 2020, season 2 will premiere on The CW in the United States, so fingers crossed Prime Video gets UK rights to that season.

No word yet on the release date for that series.
