Fans of Prodigal Son, the hit American series offering a fresh take on the crime drama genre, can kill the fatted calf after it was renewed for a second series.

Prodigal Son season 1 premiered on Fox in the US, and recently started on Sky One and NOW in the UK, with the stand-out performances by British actors Michael Sheen and Tom Payne praised by critics.

But with coronavirus causing delays to productions around the world, when can we expect Prodigal Son season 2 to start filming, and what do we know about the series so far?

Find out all you need to know about the show’s series 2 launch in the UK here, including exclusive quotes from our interview with the show's star Tom Payne.

Prodigal Son release date and how to watch in the UK

Tom Payne, who plays Malcolm Bright in Prodigal Son, revealed in an exclusive interview with that filming for season 2 is due to start in October 2020 in New York.

There are questions around how the cast and crew will travel to the filming location from their various homes across the United States and abroad (including Michael Sheen, who’s currently living in Wales), after being in lockdown due to coronavirus (COVID-19).

Payne told us: “We’re going to start filming hopefully in a couple of weeks, in October. We’ve got to figure out how we’re gonna get there… It’s a whole journey across America that has to happen before we can start shooting again.

“We’re all doing the same thing really in that we’ll all have a [coronavirus] test wherever we’re coming from, and then we’ll travel, and then we’ll have another test, and then quarantine for a couple of weeks.”

The first season of Prodigal Son filmed in spring/summer 2019, before premiering on Fox in the US in September 2019 and airing on Sky One in the UK in July 2020.

But with filming for season 2 delayed until October 2020, we wouldn’t expect it to land on Fox in the US until early 2021.

Sky One haven’t confirmed whether they’ll be picking up the series again, but if it does air on the channel, expect it to be after the show's US launch. NOW TV customers will be able to watch it with a NOW TV Entertainment Pass.

Season 1 consisted of 20 episodes, so we'd expect a similar number for series 2.

Prodigal Son season 2 cast in a nutshell

All of the main cast of Prodigal Son are expected to return for season 2, including Tom Payne (who plays criminal psychologist Malcolm Bright) and Michael Sheen (who plays Malcolm's father, serial killer Dr Martin Whitly).

Bellamy Young (Malcolm's mum, Jessica Whitly) and Halston Sage (Malcolm's sister, Ainsley Whitly) will also be back, along with Lou Diamond Phillips (Gil Arroyo), Aurora Perrineau (Dani Powell), Frank Harts (JT Tarmel) and Keiko Agena (Dr Edrisa Tanaka).

Tom Payne recently gave us an update as to whether he's kept up with his cast mates since filming for season 1 ended.

“Yeah, especially during these times, because everyone’s trying to get any information they can out of anyone,” he said. “Being the lead of a show like this, you are weirdly kind of the dad of the show, you’re kind of responsible for everyone. People do look to you for guidance and leadership.”

“Halston is my little sister now, so she calls me to talk about things, it’s really sweet. We’re always checking in on each other all the time, because it’s a tight group. I’m very accessible to everyone, they all have my phone number, and we talk a lot.

“I saw Bellamy and her partner recently. Everyone’s been very quarantined really, and Michael’s in Wales. Some people like Lou and Frank stayed in New York, Aurora is here in LA, and so is Halston. We’ve all been a bit spread around, and now we’ve got to figure out how we’re all gonna get to New York.”

Prodigal Son season 2: What will happen?

*spoilers for seasons 1 ahead*

The plot details for Prodigal Son season 2 have yet to be revealed, but we can make some assumptions based on the first season.

The Whitly family have got a major cover-up on their hands to deal with at the start of season 2, after Ainsley unexpectedly killed Dermot Mulroney's slimy Nicholas Endicott.

So expect to see the series focus more on Ainsley and her own demons alongside Malcolm's - her father is also a serial killer, after all.

Speaking to Deadline, creators and showrunners Chris Fedak and Sam Sklaver said that if the show was renewed, they would want to see more of the world through the eyes of the other characters.

Sklaver said, “Everyone who is in Martin’s life, the idea at the core of this show is 'what if your father was a serial killer?' but I’m just as fascinated by the idea of 'what if your husband was a serial killer?'

"So, I do think, we’re so blessed with Bellamy, Halston and Tom, this Whitly family, we can focus on so many aspects of them and we know that our actors can deliver with such high calibre, we can’t really do any wrong, hopefully.”

Is there a trailer for Prodigal Son season 2?

There’s not currently a trailer for Prodigal Son season 2 as it hasn’t been filmed.

However, a short teaser video was released to coincide with the season 2 announcement:

Will there be more seasons of Prodigal Son?

Fox renewed Prodigal Son for season 2 in May 2020, but no seasons beyond that have been formally commissioned.

However, Deadline previously revealed that the show's executive producer Greg Berlanti has signed an exclusive TV deal with Warner Bros. Television Group - who make Prodigal Son - until 2024.

Whether this means he'll remain an exec on any potential further seasons of Prodigal Son beyond season 2 remains to be seen.
