Tiger King season 2: Netflix teases surprise second series of true crime sensation
Joe Exotic is back! The Tiger King has appeared in a teaser for a second season of Netflix's major true crime hit - but his arch nemesis Carole Baskin will not be taking part.
Tiger King is back! A second season of Netflix's true crime documentary, watched by 64 million households within four weeks of its release in March 2020, is due to arrive on the streaming service before the end of this year.
The show's second season was teased, along with four other series, in a Netflix true crime documentary trailer released on September 23.
The brief teaser showed clips from the first season of Tiger King but also revealed a portrait of Joe Exotic and showed footage of the self-styled 'Tiger King' himself smiling and talking on what appears to be a prison phone.
Will Joe Exotic be in Tiger King season 2?
*Season 1 spoilers ahead*
Viewers might be surprised to see Tiger King return for a second season - after all, at the end of the original series, 'Tiger King' Joe Exotic was imprisoned for his murder-for-hire plot to kill Carole Baskin.
Joe - who also goes by the name Joseph Allen Maldonado - was also found guilty of violating the Endangered Species Act at his G.W. Zoo in Wynnewood, Oklahoma, and is currently serving 22 years in federal prison.
Joe's appearance in the Netflix teaser suggests that he will appear in Tiger King season 2 in some form, although it's possible that much of the new season will consist of footage shot for the original series.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly in April 2020, Tiger King producers Rebecca Chaiklin said the story of the Tiger King could be continued.
"We have a crazy amount of footage and it's a story that's still unfolding," she said.
"We're not sure yet, but there could be a follow-up on this story because there's a lot that's still unfolding in it, and it'll be just as dramatic and just as colourful as what has unfolded these past few years."
Will Carole Baskin be in Tiger King season 2?
Carole Baskin, above, who runs the Big Cat Rescue animal sanctuary in Florida, was portrayed in the first season as Joe Exotic's arch nemesis. And while she protested against his mistreatment of the animals, he chose to question her about the disappearance of her husband Don Lewis in 1997, even going as far as to accuse her of murdering him and feeding his body to their tigers.
After the series aired, law enforcement in Tampa, Florida, asked for new leads on Don's disappearance, and Carole was subject to hateful messages for months afterwards.
In a lengthy blog post, Refuting Netflix Tiger King, Baskin said that she was disappointed as the show was not what she was expecting, saying the series "had the sole goal of being as salacious and sensational as possible to draw viewers".
Since Tiger King 2 was announced, Baskin has released another statement questioning the rationale behind a second season given that she is refusing to take part and Joe Exotic is behind bars.
"I don’t know how they put out a Tiger King 2 when Joe’s in jail and I’m refusing to be played again," she said.
"Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me."
"Rebecca Chaiklin said she wanted to 'clean the air' about what they did to me in Tiger King. I told her to lose my number. There is no explanation for such a betrayal and false portrayal," she said.
When will Tiger King season 2 be on Netflix?
Tiger King 2 will arrive on Netflix on November 17.
