The Premier League weekend starts at St Mary’s where a Manchester United side looking to build some momentum visit Southampton.

Ten Hag’s team were buoyed by a battling 2-1 win over Liverpool on Monday night, taking some of the pressure off after a dismal first two games of the season.

Southampton vs Man Utd match preview

Southampton will be aiming to replicate Brentford’s dismantling of United when Tag Hen’s men arrive on the south coast.

Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl will undoubtedly have watched that game back in the hope of exploiting United’s weaknesses, which were clear to see at the Brentford Community Stadium.

But Southampton now face a United side with renewed confidence and motivation after an impressive 2-1 win over Liverpool at Old Trafford on Monday night.

Ten Hag made several changes to his starting XI for that game, notably dropping Cristiano Ronaldo and Harry Maguire, the result of which was a more cohesive look to the side.

Whether the same tactical approach will work against Southampton remains to be seen, but this will be a real test for Ten Hag after a match against Liverpool that seemed perfectly suited for the players at his disposal.

New signing Casemiro is expected to make his debut at St Mary’s after his £60m move from Real Madrid. Much of the focus will be on the Brazilian midfielder, who was in attendance at Old Trafford on Monday.

Midweek Madness on BT Sport

BT Sport will show live coverage of all 10 games from Matchday 5 in a three-day festival of Premier League football from Tuesday 30 August to Thursday 1 September

“He is the cement between the stones, that is what we have been looking for in the summer and found him,” Ten Hag said of the Casemiro transfer. “[I’m] very happy with his signing.”

Southampton will be looking to build on their impressive 2-1 win at Leicester last time out. Hasenhuttl’s side came from 2-0 down to draw with Leeds the weekend before that, so confidence should be high.

In Che Adams, the Saints have a striker in good form, with four goals in his last two games in all competitions. He will hope to give United’s leaky defence another difficult afternoon.

United could only earn a 1-1 draw on their last trip to St Mary’s, though a repeat of that result may not be the worst outcome given the Red Devils’ recent record away from home.
