Help setting up email on your mobile

Setting up your email

To set up your email on a mobile device, you’ll need:

  • your device
  • your BT email address or username
  • your email password
  • your email app (e.g. Apple Mail, Outlook)
  • incoming and outgoing server settings (IMAP/POP3 and SMTP)

Using an email app for BT Email

For iOS and Android users, we provide and recommend using the BT Email app. To download, set up and use the app, please follow the steps on this BT Email app help page.

You can also use a third-party email app to manage your emails, such as Apple Mail, Outlook or Windows Mail. Email apps store your emails on your device. You can read them even when you're offline.

To set up your email on your mobile device, you’ll need:

  • your BT email address or username
  • the password for it
  • the application you want to use (Apple Mail or Outlook, for example)
  • the incoming and outgoing server settings (also known as the IMAP/POP3 and SMTP settings) for the BT Email service
  • to enable SMTP for outgoing email - to protect from abuse by spammers, we require all emails sent through our email service to have SMTP authentication

BT requires SMTP authentication to prevent spam. Get these details from this BT Email Settings page.

About email protocols

To get your emails, your device uses either IMAP or POP3 protocols. For your information:

  • IMAP with SSL offers better security and copies of your emails remain on the server.
  • POP3 downloads emails and removes them from the server.

Details on how to use either of these is on this BT Email server settings page

To send emails, your device uses SMTP: Enable SMTP by ticking My server requires authentication in your email settings. Without SMTP authentication, you’ll see error 530 when sending emails.
