Premium rate service call barring

How do I control landline calls to premium rate numbers?

Premium rate numbers begin with’09’. They are for services like specialist help lines, TV voting or competitions by phone, charity text donations, and so on. These numbers are more expensive than standard calls or texts and charges can quickly add up.

To avoid racking up big charges for these services, you can arrange to bar premium rate calls to 09 numbers free of charge by calling 0800 800 150.

How are calls to 09 numbers charged?

We call telephone numbers starting 09 'service numbers'. The cost of a call to a service number is made up of an access charge and a service charge:

  • The access charge is what we charge you, per minute, for connecting the call
  • The service charge is the rest of the call charge. The organisation you are calling decides the service charge, and must tell you when you call. For example, if the service charge is 20p per minute, they might say: "Calls cost 20p per minute, plus your phone company's access charge"

If you add together the access charge and the service charge, you'll know exactly what the call will cost you.

I’ve changed my mind and want to cancel the premium rate service call barring – what do I do?
