Can I stream BT Sport using Chromecast or Apple TV?

Yes, with the right equipment, you can stream the app to your TV if you’re a BT Sport or app-only subscriber.

However, you won't be able to 'cast' the app on to a large screen if you watch the BT Sport App as part of a:

  • EE Mobile subscription without the large screen BT Sport App add-on
  • BT Mobile deal without BT Broadband
  • BT Business package

(Windows devices are also unable to cast to big screens, whatever subscription you’re on.)

If you are casting, be aware that it's only possible to cast the Standard player and not the Enhanced player. Also remember that the device you're using the BT Sport App on must be connected to the same wi-fi network as your Apple TV or Chromecast.

First you need to follow the instructions to set up your Apple TV. Apple's set-up instructions are available here >

Now follow the steps below:

  1. Put your TV on the correct HDMI channel. This will be the same HDMI port that your Apple TV is plugged into
  2. Access the app as normal on your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch
  3. Find the event you want to Airplay and click on it to start the stream on your device. When you're presented with the option of 'standard' or 'enhanced' player, choose 'standard'
  4. If the device senses an Apple TV on the same network, an 'Airplay' icon will appear in the bottom-right corner of the video player. Tap this icon
  5. A TV screen showing a football match and the Airplay icon in the bottom right corner of the video player

  6. When you're presented with the menu, select 'Apple TV'. The video will then start Airplaying to your TV
  7. Enhanced player

  8. If you want to stop Airplaying, click on the blue 'Airplay' icon
  9. A TV screen showing a football match and the Airplay icon in the bottom right corner of the video player

  10. When you're presented with the menu, click on your device. This will stop the event from Airplaying on your TV, and playback will resume on your device
  11. A menu showing Apple TV and iPhone options

We’re aware that some customers using devices running iOS 9 can't see the Airplay icon in the video player. If you're experiencing this issue, please make sure you have downloaded iOS 9.0.2 or later. If you still can't see the Airplay icon, you can still Airplay BT Sport to your Apple TV by swiping upwards on your iPhone or iPad to bring up the Control Panel. You can then select the Airplay icon from there. You should not have mirroring enabled when you try to use Airplay.

When you're using Airplay functionality within the BT Sport App, the video won't appear on the screen of your device.

You can 'cast' video to Chromecast from either the iOS or Android version of the BT Sport App.

First you need to set up your Chromecast according to the manufacturer's instructions. Chromecast set-up instructions are available here  >

Now follow the steps below to stream BT Sport through Chromecast.

  1. Put your TV on the correct HDMI channel
  2. Make sure your Chromecast is set up to the same wireless network as your iOS or Android device
  3. You'll then see the casting icon in the top right corner of the app screen. Select this icon. If you don’t see the casting icon and you use an Android device, please make sure your Google Play Service is up to date. To do this, click this link to update from your Android device. Please select the option to update if it’s available. Do not uninstall the service.

Streaming during a live event

You can also start casting the BT Sport channels via Chromecast when you’re already watching a live event. Just tap the casting icon in the top-right to connect your Chromecast device.

When you're casting, you'll see a message showing which Chromecast you're connected to, rather than the video.

You'll also see player controls on the screen to jump forward or back 30 seconds, and to pause the stream. You can only use these controls when watching video on demand, such as a clip or full programme catch-up. The rewind and fast forward buttons won't work when you're watching a live stream of one of the BT Sport channels.

How to stop casting

Just tap the cast icon in the top right-hand corner of the screen. You can then choose whether to disconnect by clicking Stop Casting or to cancel and keep watching.

Problems streaming BT Sport channels to your Chromecast?

If you have problems streaming the BT Sport channels to your Chromecast, it may be that Chromecast isn't receiving a strong enough Wi-fi signal from your hub. We recommend you try using the extender that's included in the Chromecast kit.

Be aware that you can only cast live events when watching through the Standard player. Chromecast isn’t compatible with BT Sport’s Enhanced player.
