Job shares can be beneficial to a business and the people who are sharing the job. We caught up with Rebecca and Kate to see how they make it work.

Who are you?

Rebecca Stagg and Kate Hennings and we work in Consumer division which is the B2C area of the business, HR Programme Management Office (Job Share).

Tell us an interesting fact about yourselves?

One of us has served Duck and Noodles to Gwynth Paltrow in a restaurant in Lincoln! One of us can confirm that Dermot O’Leary is as nice in person as he comes across on TV!

Tell us about what do you do and where in BT you work?

We work in the Consumer HR Team and are responsible for the programme office for the Consumer HR Director and HR team. This includes; managing the governance of the Consumer People Strategy – tracking and reporting on how we’re delivering against this, managing risks and quarterly business unit reviews, planning what’s getting delivered and ensuring everyone is informed and prepared and reviewing what resource is needed.

What’s been a recent proud work achievement for you both?

This year we managed the preparation for the biggest internal event of the year called Consumer Live, where EE, BT and PlusNet employees come together in Birmingham. We put together the People Stands and elements, it was great to see this become reality after all the planning working with different stakeholders both internal and external.

How has BT supported you in your job share?

The support has been incredible – from the initial suggestion of advertising for a job share when the role required full time resource following the integration of BT and EE, through to people’s support and acceptance working with us – never an issue and peoples feedback has been really positive on how well we make the job share work.

How do you deal with sharing your work?

Trust, excellent communication, good organisation and planning are key – one of us works Monday to Wednesday and the other Weds- Friday. We have hand over calls first thing to catch up on what’s happened, have shared files, calendars and copy each other into emails/invites so we both know what’s going on. We’ve got a what’s app to ask key q’s or share info and we own some set meetings but generally co-design and deliver work.

What are the benefits of a job share?

For the business – increased knowledge, skills, ideas as have 2 people bringing these to the table in a role, plus increased cover throughout the year, alongside increased engagement, commitment, loyalty and morale. For individuals – a better work-life balance, knowing that work is progressing while you are off and not stacking up, flexibility to work round other commitments, learning and development from your job share.

What advice would you offer to someone like you who was considering a career with BT?

Go for it! There are so many opportunities to learn, grow and develop and I’ve found BT has been a flexible employer as my life has changed allowing a balance between work and home commitments whatever they may be.
