It’s time to talk CV’s.
Everybody has one (we hope so!). But how can you ensure your CV is working hard enough when it comes to showcasing yourself to a new employer? Your CV is often the first thing any company will see, even before they see you. It’s essentially your best foot forward - your very first impression. It’s super important, therefore, to make it as impressive and memorable as possible. Your CV is essentially the story of your education and career to date. Here are our top tips on how to piece your own story together for potential employers…
1. Remember the central character – you!
Treat yourself as both the author and central character of your story of success. This is a time to talk about you and really step into the limelight. There are no prizes for modesty here – if you’ve achieved it, talk about it! This is your biggest chance to really talk yourself up and tailor your transferable skills and experience to the type of job you’re applying for.
2. Chapter your story
Think of each job you’ve previously held as an important chapter of your story. It works well to document these in reverse order, so be reflective. Start with the most recent position and consider what each role has taught you and how it’s contributed to your story. List the things you’ve achieved, learned and how your experiences have shaped you and what you can bring to the table.
3. Decide on your themes
Every great story has its themes - they are the glue that holds the whole narrative together. When writing your CV, try to organise your experience into themes relevant to the job you’re trying to land. It’s important to tailor your story to the job description and to your audience. For example, will the role require strategic thinking or creativity? It’s also important to touch on how each role you’ve held supports the all - important themes of teamwork, leadership and overcoming adversity to achieve success.
4. Consider your backstory
Your CV is a good opportunity to think about how your past experiences and gambles have shaped your career to date. For example, if it’s a managerial role you’re applying for, you may like to think about your past managers. What did they do that has influenced your own management style? Don’t go off on a tangent here, but some small and interesting extra details may help your story to stand out from the rest.
5. Practise and recite
Once you’ve developed and refined your story, the next step is to practice telling it. If your CV does the job it’s meant to then hopefully you’ll make it to the interview process. But don’t wait until crunch time to start talking about yourself. Practicing speaking out loud and reading from your CV is a great rehearsal technique. Think of ways you can elaborate on what you’ve already told them that will keep potential employers engaged. You may like to recruit a trusted friend or family member to read through it - all great authors have an editor after all. The key point here is to be prepared!
