Your CV is the first thing a recruiter and manager are going to see of you. Plus, recruiters can receive hundreds of applications for any one role, so how to do you make sure you stand out from the pack?
We spoke to our recruiters to get their top tips on making your CV the one that stops them in their tracks and pay attention.
1. Cut the waffle
You’ve got about 10 seconds to draw a recruiter in with your CV. That’s it. So, the easier it is for them to see you’ve got the right skills and experience, the more likely you are to get past the first hurdle.
2. Prove it
Don’t just tell us that project management is a key skill - everyone can say project management is a skill. To really stand out, prove it. If you’ve delivered a multi-million pound, global project on time and within budget (and that’s relevant to the role you’re applying for!) you should definitely tell us that.
Facts, figures and results are what makes a recruiter and hiring manager’s eyes light up.
3. We’re not mind readers
You’ve read the job advert and you tick most of the boxes. You’ve checked us out and realised it’s not just the right role, but the right company for you too. Wonderful.
But if you’ve not tailored your CV to show that you tick those boxes we don’t know how perfect you are so you’ll be doing yourself a huge disservice. Always, always check through your CV and make sure you’ve highlighted the skills and experience for the specific role.
4. We’re secretly assessing you
A CV isn’t just a CV. It’s a written communication assessment too. Spelling, grammar and formatting might not seem like a big deal, but trust us when we say this: they really are.
5. Show us a bit of who you are
Don’t be afraid to show us your personality. For some of our roles you’ll need to fill in a few questions on your application form and for others you might need to pull together a cover letter. They’re perfect places to put a spotlight on who you are.
