In Field Services we aim to keep our customers connected constantly so that their business can thrive. We look after service in the field – this means we work on-site with our customers. Our customers range from small local business right up to large corporate organisations.

Some of our larger and complex customers have very specific needs from our teams and that’s what we’re here to serve. That could be anything from provision or repair, hardware, software or infrastructure.

Do you want to play a key role in helping our customers make the most out of their digital products and services?

As a Field Support Technician you will be working in the field day-to-day, you will attend customer sites to help with installations where engineering support is required to set-up, install, and carry out non-complex and simple repairs. You will also be able to confidently talk through ideas and problems a customer may have in connection to the BT portfolio. You will make sure customer’s services and solutions are set up, optimised and the customer is using them. You will make recommendations on new solutions and may even, sell them to the customer.

Training & support

With our training and ongoing support you’ll not only learn the ropes but you’ll develop personally, learning skills such as:

  • Basic install, commission and maintenance of customer equipment transmission to meet customer requirements.
  • How to set up BT apps and services for the customer on their device
  • Customer’s existing technical set-up and will have the awareness and appropriate understanding to recommend solutions, products and services to improve their service

The apprenticeship framework you’ll follow will vary depending upon where in the UK you are based. In England, you’ll follow Unified Communications Level 3, in Wales you’ll follow IT Software, Web & Telecoms Professional Level 3, and in Scotland you’ll follow ICT Modern Apprenticeship Level 3.  

Entry requirements

You’ll need to achieve a minimum of four GCSEs at grades 4-9 (C or above) including English and Maths. Equivalent qualifications are accepted. You’ll also need a full driving license with no more than six points.

BT’s network is at the heart of everything we do; from sending a text, to air traffic control systems. Our network is constantly evolving and we’re at the forefront of technology development that will provide the basis for the next generation of cutting-edge mobile networks and services.

Our Network Engineer Apprentices play a key part in ensuring our networks are designed, tested, built and maintained with fresh, new, innovative ideas in mind. You’ll have the opportunity to get involved in a range of areas including testing the latest networking technology, upgrading the existing network and the planning, installing and running of network elements.

You may also have the opportunity to gain an in-depth understanding of mobile networks and the technologies that underpin them playing a key part in supporting and maintaining high levels of stability and performance of the biggest and best mobile network in the UK.

Once you complete your training a wide variety of roles will be available to you within BT.

Training & support

Throughout the course of your apprenticeship you’ll gain a wealth of invaluable experience. You’ll also be taught job specific skills such as how to plan, design, build and test a simple network applying appropriate security products and processes.

You’ll learn how to identify the key characteristics of a new network service, how to analyse traffic intensity and estimate traffic loads and how to determine the minimum capacity required to meet network requirements.

You’ll have the opportunity to design, build, test, configure and optimise a distributed network including switches, routers and firewalls as well as analyse performance and troubleshoot typical problems.

You’ll also be trained to identify and evaluate security risks, then incorporate relevant security products and processes into network designs to increase resilience and dependability.

Entry requirements

To join our Technical Apprenticeship in IT & Telecommunications programme you’ll need to achieve 108 UCAS points or Scottish Highers at Grade BBBB. Equivalent qualifications are accepted.
