We caught up with Seona to see what a day-to-day looks like for a finance manager.
Tell us an interesting fact about yourself?
My proudest achievement is still managing to cycle from London to Brighton on a bike with only three gears!
Tell us about what do you do and where in BT you work?
I work in as a Finance Manager in Consumer, where I look after Opex for Channels & Trading and Corporate Property.
What does your day-to-day look like?
It very much depends on the time in the month: The first and last week of the month is centred on month end processing and reporting. It is my responsibility to ensure the correct accounting treatment is applied to items in the P&L, and to investigate any variances to forecast or month on month movements. I support the Commercial Finance team throughout the month, but this is particularly important at month end to provide commentary on the results to the wider business and senior leaders.
Outside of month end a normal day will be working on various ad-hoc projects, for example I’ve most recently been working on the introduction and implementation of a new accounting standard, IFRS16, which has been a challenging but great experience to see how a standard goes from theory into practice in such a large organisation.
Tell us about how BT has supported you to have the career you hoped for?
EE/BT funded and supported me through my accounting qualification, which has opened so many doors and enabled me to progress my career. Being part of such a large organisation means there are always opportunities to move into different teams and broaden your experience – I haven’t stayed in the same role for more than 18 months.
What’s been a recent proud work achievement for you?
Being successful in applying for my current role on a permanent basis. I began my current role as a secondment, which was a grade higher than my previous role. To secure a higher grade role has been a goal for me since I passed my final CIMA exam, so to finally achieve that was a proud moment for me.
What do you love about working in your team?
The people. Having a laugh with the people around you makes the day fly by, plus being in such a supportive and friendly environment has really facilitated my personal development.
Finally, What advice would you offer to someone like you who was considering a career with BT?
Give it go. There are probably teams within BT that manage areas/activities that you didn’t even know were part of BT – there is something to suit everyone. I work in the Consumer division of BT and our business area is at a particularly exciting point with the launch of 5G so it’s the perfect time to get involved!
