Muhammad Khan has won Apprentice of the Year for the South-East region and we caught up with him before he goes onto the National finals in November.
What’s it been like working at BT?
It has been the change I needed in my career. The support I’ve had around me since joining has been tremendous and this has played a massive part in me actually enjoying what I do.
What’s your day-to-day role like?
As Customer Connections Team Leader, my role consists of coaching members on the team to achieve a high quality of work, dealing with team stats such as how many live projects we have that are allocated / unallocated (etc.), I also ensure we are meeting our key performance measures that have been set by senior management.
What was it like to be named apprentice of the year for the South East region?
I was thrilled! Rewind 2 years and I would never have imagined winning this award for BT, especially when I was up against such stiff competition! Seeing the smile on the face of Mum & Dad was the icing on top of the cake.
Did you get nominated by a colleague / manager for the award? What was the process?
My Operational Manager suggested I apply for the award. This required me to fill in an application that had around 5/6 questions including a word limit. This meant I had to be really concise when answering each question.
Was there a particular project / event that led you to be nominated?
I would say my growth as a person was spotted throughout my Apprenticeship. This led to me being promoted to Team Leader prior to my Apprenticeship coming to an end – making me the first Apprentice Team Leader on-site.
Are you excited for the finals?
Very! I wasn’t expecting to win the Regionals but now I’m here, I cannot wait! Hopefully I can bring the award back for BT!
What’s been your favourite memory since joining BT?
Tough question! I would say my favourite memory would be the people I’ve worked with. They have honestly been brilliant and it has encouraged me to aim higher as a person.
What do you like to do for fun when you’re not working hard to be the Apprentice of the year?
I love riding motorbikes – dangerous, I know! Travelling is something I love to do too, keeps me busy planning my next destination/s throughout the year!
What advice would you give to someone wanting to start an apprentice role or new role with BT?
I would say go for it. Honestly, you will have the support of everyone when you join and if you don’t feel this is the case (unlikely!) – reach out to me and I’ll be happy to help where I can.
Any final words of wisdom or inspiring final comments?
Be confident in your own abilities. Life has a funny way of working out just when you may have started to believe it never will. Good luck!
