Do you ever feel you spend so much time at your desk at work, that it’s impossible to make truly healthy lifestyle choices day to day? Yep - us too. It’s a slightly disheartening reality that many of us spend most of our day, five days a week, sat down and fixated on a computer screen. But fear not! When it comes to staying a little healthier during the 9-5 hours, BT has got it covered. Here are a couple of super simple tips from our employees on how to stay as healthy and active as possible at your desk.
#1 Take a break
Even on your busiest days it’s really important to get away from your desk, stretch your legs, reset your mind - and come back more productive. Skipping breaks to get the work done can leave you less creative and unproductive. Take your breaks and you’ll be more likely to finish work on time. Every hour, try and unglue yourself from your desk for a couple of minutes and take a walk, whether it’s while taking a phone call, or speaking with a colleague face to face rather than sending an email.
Oh, don’t forget to take your lunch and your holidays too!
#2 Stay hydrated
Do you want to improve your mood, your energy levels and increase your brain power? Do you fancy reducing your hunger cravings and beating the afternoon slump? The list of benefits can go on, but the answer is simple...drink more water!
Staying hydrated could possibly be the oldest trick in the book. And by this, we don’t mean coffee. Keep a bottle of water at your desk and drink plenty of it. If you find plain water boring, then mix it up! You could infuse it with lemon or cucumber, or even keep a bottle of cordial handy.
#3 Practice good posture
Trying not to hunch over your computer as you’re drawn into your screen is can be hard work. Maintaining a good posture involves a real effort - but it’s easy enough to improve with a bit of practice. Remind yourself to sit up straight for a while, and don’t forget to stretch throughout the day. If you’re uncomfortable when sat down, you made need to adjust your chair - or even request a new one from your boss.
Remember, it’s all about listening carefully to your body!
#4 Eat well, feel brilliant
You’ve heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so why would you skip it? If you’re not a fan of eating early, or always find mornings a rush - why not prepare some overnight oats the evening before work? Whilst you’re planning breakfast you could also prep your lunch too! You’ll feel better in yourself and save money. What could be better?
And finally, snacks. Snacking isn’t banned - but you should keep healthy treats stashed at your desk so you’re less tempted by the ‘bad’ stuff such as cakes, crisps and chocolate.
#5 Lay off the caffeine
Perhaps the hardest one of all! Caffeine is a natural stimulant that many of us rely on to get through the working day, and most commonly found in tea and coffee. Don’t worry, we’re not saying you have to give up your coffee fix completely - half of the office would probably fall asleep otherwise! What we do suggest though, is moderation with your caffeine intake. Whilst it can have it’s benefits and make us feel more alert throughout the working day, it can also leave us with some unpleasant side effects, not to mention the withdrawals if we don’t get our fix!
Maybe this week try replacing the odd cup with something a little different. Decaf, anyone?
