Here at BT, we believe that the road to career success can take many different routes. Often people are led to believe the only way of securing their ideal job is through obtaining a university degree, when in reality there are many different options!

When it comes to deciding which path to take for your future career, it is crucial you pick the one that’s right for you. One valuable option worth considering is an apprenticeship, and here are a couple of reasons why this could be the perfect avenue for you to take…

1. Earn whilst you learn

There’s no denying that money is an important factor in all of our lives, and a massive incentive for any job. Having dinner with friends, splash out on some new clothes or book that trip away; are perks we all enjoy from time to time when payday arrives. As a student, however, the luxury of treating yourself can sometimes seem unattainable as studying takes priority. However with an apprenticeship, you’ll have the opportunity to earn a wage as you gain your qualifications. Kind of like having a part time job as part of your studies - what could be better?!

2. You’ll achieve great qualifications

Aside from all of the practical skills and experience you’ll gain from an apprenticeship – you’ll also have the benefit of earning respected qualifications as you go. For some industries these certifications will be just as valuable, if not more on occasions, as gaining a relevant degree. They’re also a great indication that you’re capable of hitting the ground running and getting stuck into the task at hand. Even if your career ultimately takes you in a different direction – these qualifications look great on your CV and will always speak volumes about your work ethic.

3. Get ahead of the game

Just because you’ve graduated from university doesn’t necessarily mean that you’ll walk straight into a job with a high starting salary. Whilst this can be true in some circumstances, it’s not a given. In today’s job climate, there are other things at play when it comes to what is truly valued in the workplace. Employers look for more than just qualifications – they also want experience, leadership skills, communication capabilities and a sense of initiative. An apprenticeship will require you to work on all of these areas and put you in a great position when it comes to the realities of the working world. It also gives you a head start on the career ladder, as you will not have to take a couple of years out to study first.

4. First-hand experience

For those that like to get stuck into a job and learn by doing, rather than swatting for exams, an apprenticeship could be the perfect choice of direction. Okay, so there is a bit of coursework along the way, but the majority of your time will involve practical learning and picking things up as you go along.

As an apprentice you’ll gain valuable first-hand experience as to how your role works, which you may not get at university. Once the apprenticeship is over, you then have that experience to add to your C.V - which can play a big part in securing yourself that dream job.

Here at BT, we’re passionate about encouraging all of our people to fulfil their full potential and smash through their career goals. We’re proud of our apprenticeship scheme and how much we do to help springboard the careers of many young people. As a BT apprentice, you’ll earn a wage while you learn and work towards nationally recognised professional qualifications.
