Located just 20 miles north of London and within 5 miles of St Albans and 15 mile of Watford, Hatfield in Hertfordshire is of Saxon origin. Hatfield House, the home of the Marquess of Salisbury, is the nucleus of the old town. From the 1930s when de Havilland opened a factory until the 1990s when British Aerospace closed, Hatfield was associated with aircraft design and manufacture, which employed more people than any other industry.
Hatfield was one of the post-war New Towns built around London and has much modernist architecture from the period.
Nowadays, with the University of Hertfordshire playing a key role in the town, creating a more student vibe.
Just 10 minutes away, St Albans has a great selection of bars and pubs. If you're looking for something quick and easy, the Galleria shopping centre in the town has burgers and pizzas galore, as well as oriental food and cocktails. In St Albans you can find anything from Japanese to authentic Italian pizza.
You can catch all the latest films at the 10-screen multiplex cinema at the nearby Galleria, and for theatre, the nearby towns of Hertford and Stevenage both have their own theatres. For quality without West End prices, there are modern plays, classics and adaptations at the Palace Theatre in Watford, but if you fancy saving up for the real thing, London's West End theatres are within easy reach.
There's a vibrant live music scene in Hertfordshire, with indie and rock at The Horn in St Albans, rock, metal and punk at the Hertford Marquee and live music at The Green Room in Welwyn – and loads more, all within a bus or train ride of the town.
