Setting the global agenda

The forum's annual meeting is the world's leading business-related summit. This year's theme was "Shaping the global agenda - the shifting power equation."

At the annual meeting, leaders from business, government, and society from more than 100 countries helped set the global agenda, identify emerging issues and challenges, and engage in dialogue, initiative and action.

The focus areas for 2007 were:

  • Economics: New drivers
  • Geopolitics: The need for fresh mandates
  • Technology and society: Identity, community and networks
  • Business: Leading in a connected world

What is "The shifting power equation"?

As the global importance of Brazil, Russia, India and China (the "BRIC" countries) increases, new business models will evolve.

The annual meeting questioned whether our global environment can sustain the current rate of change, and offered unique insights into the governance deficit and the need for collective responses.

BT's involvement

Ben Verwaayen, Chief Executive Officer, BT, spoke at the session 'Leading in a Networked World'. The panel explored the definition of both what is meant by a networked world, and defining what imperatives this implies for corporate leaders.

Ben also spoke at a session entitled 'New Blood for Industrialised Societies', which debated the global situation whereby more than 140 million people live outside their countries of birth, with illegal immigration being the most rapidly growing form of human migration. Developed economies, particularly in the EU and US, face new challenges as well as opportunities in managing their immigration policies.
